History

The ROMATOM Association was founded on January 10, 2001. A member of Nucleareurope, ROMATOM currently has over 60 members, starting with Nuclearelectrica, the only nuclear energy producer in Romania, to producers and suppliers of goods and services in the nuclear industry, researchers and specialists.

Activities

ROMATOM represents the voice of the nuclear industry in Romania and carries out activities in support of the nuclear industry and research in Romania: promoting the Romanian supply chain, organizing events, workshops, meetings, webinars, partnerships with local and international actors

Objectives

Promoting and implementing a common strategy for the nuclear industry in Romania, both on the domestic and international market; Educating national and local decision-makers, the population and the media on the use and benefits of nuclear energy.

Romania has a long tradition in the nuclear sector, dating back to the 1960s. With two CANDU 6 reactors, each with a capacity of 700 MWh, Romania is a significant contributor to the national energy landscape, covering 20% of energy demand and 33% of clean, low-carbon energy production. Put simply: 1 in 5 light bulbs in Romanian homes is powered by nuclear energy. In addition, Romania operates a nuclear fuel plant, a heavy water facility and supports a vibrant network of research institutes and universities, along with a developed horizontal industry that can support up to 40% of the implementation of a new nuclear project. Romania is also at the forefront of adopting Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology, marking itself as a leader in exploring the energy of the future.

Advantages and
benefits

Romania is among the few countries in the world that has a complete industrial cycle in this field, so the advantages of nuclear energy are enormous. When the decision was made to develop nuclear energy in Romania, the fact that Romania has uranium mines was taken into account. Currently, our country extracts uranium at Crucea (Suceava County), but plans to open new mines in the Tulgheş (Harghita) – Grinţieş (Neamţ) area.

Nuclear Energy

Fission is the basis for obtaining nuclear energy. This process consists of the absorption of a neutron by a large atomic nucleus such as uranium, which will thus become unstable. It will break into several fragments, with a large release of thermal energy, which greatly accelerates the resulting fragments, which reach very high speeds. Due to their high speed, these fragments, following fission, can in turn penetrate other atoms, where they cause other fissions.

About us

The Romanian Atomic Forum ROMATOM was founded on January 10, 2001 by 14 companies with private or state capital and two non-governmental associations. ROMATOM, the association of the nuclear industry in Romania, is a Romanian legal entity under private law, independent and representative at national level, without patrimonial or lucrative purpose, non-governmental, non-profit, apolitical, made up of associated members or supporters.
ROMATOM members are:
- Romanian and/or foreign legal entities whose object of activity is the production of electrical and thermal energy through nuclear processes;
- suppliers of goods and service providers from the Romanian nuclear industry;
- other legal entities carrying out activities in the field of energy in general, nuclear energy in particular, or activities related to the field of nuclear energy, research in the field of atomic and nuclear physics;
- professional, technical and scientific associations.
