Romatom: 60 years from Establishing the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM)

The celebration of 60 years since the establishment of the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) is welcomed with satisfaction by the nuclear industry in Romania, along with the entire European nuclear industry.EURATOM Treaty, was signed in Rome on March 25, 1957 with the signing of the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community (EEC) through which a generalized European common market was created, which later became the European Union today.EURATOM is the European framework for the development of nuclear energy in the member states of the European Union that have chosen the peaceful use of nuclear energy as part of their energy mix, representing the legal basis of the decisions of European institutions in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The Treaty of Euratom, having clear provisions regarding the jointly putting knowledge, infrastructures and funding, has led to an unprecedented development of nuclear energy in the European Union, which concentrates about one third of the number of nuclear power plants around the world.Research and European nuclear industry, by delivery (design, construction and commissioning) of nuclearoelectric power stations, manufacture of nuclear equipment, nuclear fuel and radioactive descriptions have a world leading position.

The signatory parts of the Euratom Treaty ".. conscious of the fact that nuclear energy represents the essential resource ” which will ensure the development and renewal of the electricity production, in defining the Euratom mission (art. 2 of the treaty) pays special attention to the development of the research, facilitation "Investments and ensuring the realization of the basic installations necessary for the development of nuclear energy…."And"Ensuring a constant and equitable supply of all EU users with nuclear ore and fuels"On the principle of equal access to resources. Thus, the recent decisions of the European Commission regarding the approval of the financing schemes for the construction of two new nuclear units in Paks II in Hungary, respectively for the 10 -year extension of the life of three nuclear reactors in Belgium, evoked provisions of the Euratom Treaty on the role of Nuclear Energy, respectively the development of the European Union, and develops the framework of the EEC treaty, regarding the right of the Member States to choose their energy mix.

Starting with the entry of Romania in the accession phase and then as a member state of the European Union, major decisions within the nuclear program in our country had the support of European institutions, reminiscent of obtaining in June 2004 a European financing of 223,500,000 euros for the completion of unit 2 from the Cernavoda CNE or obtaining the point of view of the Commission, based on the Commission.41 - 44 of the Euratom Treaty, regarding the project 3 and 4 units in Cernavoda in November 2010. Along with the institutions of the Romanian and Nuclearelectrica state, the nuclear industry in Romania through Romatom had a special contribution to obtaining this support, by organizing sessions for information decision -making, relating with high factors of the European Commission, facing the European Commission. The members of the European Parliament in Cernavoda and through debates organized in Strasbourg, with the participation of Romanian, Bulgarian, Finns and British MEPs.

The nuclear industry in Romania, through the Romatom voice, aware of its European vocation, believes that to ensure energy security, reaching targets on carbon emissions and ensuring consumers' access, through a balanced and neutral technological mix, in which nuclear energy represents about 30-32% in 2030-The European Atomic Energy Community is decisive.

The Romanian nuclear industry is part of a European industry that provides 27% of the electricity production of the European Union, as well as 50% of the energy with reduced carbon emissions by specific 15GCO emissions2/KWh, with a turnover of about 70 billion euros, providing 800,000 jobs in the 129 nuclear reactors from 14 Member States, as well as in the associated horizontal industry.
