Between 7 and 11 October 2019, a Canadian economic mission including 19 companies providing equipment and services working in the nuclear field He made a working visit to Romania, consisting of meetings and visits on the field, in order to identify the potential partnerships for various projects of common interest for the two parties.
The commercial mission was run by the Canadian nuclear industry organization (OCNI), having a strong support from Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, the visit being co-financed through the program Global Affairs Canada, CanExport, the Romanian partner being the Romanian atomic forum (Romatom).
The 30 members of the delegation met with Romanian nuclear suppliers, drill members and visited the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant and the Institute for Nuclear Research from Pitesti.
Directors from the Ministry of Energy, Nuclearelectrica, Nuclear Agency and for Radioactive Waste (ANDR), the nuclear regulatory authority in Romania (CNCAN) and Romatom presented to the Canadian legacy members the recent developments in Romania. The major projects envisaged by Nuclearelectrica, the re-technologization of unit 1 and the completion of units 3 and 4 from Cernavoda, andr storage of nuclear waste were presented, providing specific information on nuclear regulation and quality management in Romania. The two days of meetings face to face between Canadian delegates and nuclear suppliers in Romania were also an essential part of the Ocni commercial mission. The capabilities of the Romanian nuclear industry are highlighted by the first and third place occupied by units 2 and 1 from Cernavoda CNE, by Canadian conception, in the world ranking of nuclear power plants in terms of capacity factors.
«FThe Romanian, Nuclearelectrica urnizers, as well as other important entities in the Romanian nuclear sector, have reconfirmed their intention to continue and extend the collaboration with the Canadian nuclear industry, a collaboration started 30 years ago by constructing Candu Nuclear Units on Cernavoda site», a subliniat Dr. Ron Oberth, Presedinte si CEO al OCNI.
«Increasing the demand for electricity, combined with the significant reduction plans for electricity production by burning coal until 2030, a condition for fulfilling Romania's objectives reducing greenhouse gas emissions, will require the continuation of the existing units at the Cernavoda power station, as wellSource of clean energy for our country», Declared the executive director of Romatom, Gheorghe Lucaciu.
Two important agreements were announced during the one -week trade mission. Thus, SNC-Lavalin and Nuclearelectrica signed a contract of $ 15 million in order to make an assessment of the state 1 for the preparation of the re-technological process of this unit.
In addition, Nordion (Canada) Inc.Nuclearelectrica also ended a memorandum to evaluate the potential cobalt commercial production at the Cernavoda nuclear-electric power station.Cobalt 60 is used to sterilize disposable medical equipment, to reduce pathogens in food and treat certain forms of cancer.
«The following steps in the collaboration in the Romanian-Canadian nuclear field will be represented by the visit of a team of project managers from Nuclearelectrica SA and Romanian suppliers in Canada in the first part of 2020 to find out more about the challenges associated with planning, contracting and execution in the case of life extension for the life for Nuclear Power Bruce and Power Bruce.», Added Ron Oberth.Ocni, Romatom and the Canadian Commercial Office in Bucharest are preparing a new mission in October 2020 to analyze the results of this mission and identify financial and supply models for the construction of units 3 and 4 from Cernavoda.
The organization of nuclear industries in Canada (Ocni) is an association that includes over 200 peak suppliers in Canada, having activities in both Canada and foreign markets. The companies within the OCNI have over 14,000 high -qualified employees and specialized engineers, qualified technologies and employees who project reactors, manufactures and major components and provide engineering and support services to CANADA nuclear power plants, but also for CANDU power stations and power stations equipped with nuclear reactors with pressure water (LW) outside Canada).
Romanian atomic forum (Romatom) has over 35 active member companies operating in the fields: equipment, construction, technical design and other nuclear services in support of nuclear installation owners.Romatom communicates with the governmental departments relevant for promoting safe, efficient and sustainable development, highlighting the role of nuclear energy in Romania to achieve these goals.Romatom is a member of the European Atomic Forum (Foratoma) and an active part in the national and European debate on energy strategy and sustainable policies.
