The Romanian Atomic Forum ("Romatom") announces the opening on 02.10.2017, of the works of the International Symposium for Atomic Energy, Sien 2017, an event organized in Bucharest in partnership with the Romanian Association "Nuclear Energy", under the aegis of the European Nuclear Society - ENS.
This year's edition is organized in a favorable European and national context, marked by evolutions regarding the development of nuclear and research and innovation programs both in the Member States and in Romania, in the context of developing national nuclear projects: Retehnologization of the unit 1 Cernavoda-The largest energy project in the national energy system,Cernavoda, Eli-NP laser project and lead-cooled generation demonstrator-Alfred.
The opening of the works of Sien 2017 was marked by the presence of the general director of the European Atomic Forum, Yves Desbazeille, who sent a message of support from the European nuclear industry to the initiatives and projects developed in the Romanian environment, projects that place Romania on the European map of nuclear programs developers.Mr.Desbazeille has strengthened the need to support nuclear projects in the long -term projects, mentioning the perspective of taking over the European Presidency by Romania in the first semester of 2019. Romania currently holds the presidency of the working group and the initiative "Nuclear Like Minded States", a position from which it can influence the European -level debate on new levels on new nuclear levels, the construction of new nuclear units and ensuring the financing mechanisms.
Following the accession of Romania at Nea OECD in the middle of 2017, Henri Paillere, director within the NEA OECD present at the opening of Sien, emphasized the importance of Romania's participation in the programs initiated in the OECD regarding financing structures of new nuclear units, optimizing the costs of construction and operation, the development of the technologies for the reactors for the reactors.Candu 6 - unique technology in Europe.
The Romanian authorities present in Sien have reported the progress made in the sectors of activity related to the production of nuclear energy, which come to complete the robustness and sustainability in the long term: the establishment of the heavy water management authority, the start of the process for approving the strategy for the storage of weak and medium radioactive, the development of the research-development capabilities.
"Nuclear energy is part of the solution. This is the message transmitted by the speakers present at the opening of Sien. And the evolutions we have been witnesses lately demonstrate that nuclear energy continues to be a priority for countries with a long tradition as the United Kingdom, as well as for countries that now embark on the nuclear program such as Poland.qualified and the results of the operation of the two nuclear units from Cernavoda that demonstrate the reliability of the technology. In the research and innovation area that we hope to give us an important competitive advantage in an external environment in a continuous evolution ”-Romatom president, Dr. Ioan Rotaru.
The nuclear energy produced by the two units from Cernavoda CNE, provides approx.18% of the electricity consumed in Romania, contributing to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by approx.12,000,000 tonnes CO2/year, which would otherwise occur by burning fossil fuels.
