The Romanian Atomic Forum, "Romatom", representing the Association of the Nuclear Industry in Romania, greets the common statement of 10 EU member states, including Romania, transmitted to the European Commission on October 11, 2021, regarding the support of the essential role of nuclear energy in decarbonization.
The common letter is signed by the resort ministers in France, Romania, the Czech Republic, Finland, Slovakia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Poland and Hungary and argues that reaching the environmental targets assumed by the Member States on climate neutrality by 2050 with an accelerated target for reducing greenhouse gas with 55% by 205Integrated by all sources with low carbon emissions, including nuclear energy.Analysis on the entire cycle of production of nuclear energy performed by the Joint Research Center ("JRC"), the scientific authority belonging to the European Commission and published in March 2021, attests that the nuclear energy is sustainable, having an important contribution in decarbonization, equality with the other sources without carbon emissions already included in the taxonomie. From the point of view of the beneficial impact on the environment, nuclear energy has led to the avoidance of release in the atmosphere of 74gt of CO2 emissions globally over the last 50 years, more than double CO2 planetary emissions, according to the conclusions of the study made by the Economic Committee for Europe of the United Nations. In Romania, since the commissioning of units 1 and 2 from Chernode CNE, the release of 170 million tonnes of CO2 has been avoided, which is equivalent to about 10 million tonnes per year for 2 units in operation, the figure after the commissioning of 3 and 4 units in 2030-2031.To the environmental benefits are added a number of social and economic benefits: ensuring 12,600 jobs at the present nuclear industry level in Romania, the figure that will increase to 20,000 with the implementation of new nuclear projects, 5.7 billion euros in GDP, support for education, research and innovation, ensuring an infrastructure in Romania, contributing in Romania, energy and security in supply.
Romatom supports the inclusion of nuclear energy in the shortest possible time in the complementary delegate act announced by the European Commission for this year, being imperious to outline the framework for regulatory future investments, at the level of equality with the other clean energy sources, based on the scientific conclusions established by the JRC report and independently verified by 2 groups of expertsEmergences within the European Commission and the group of experts constituted on the basis of art.
“The inclusion of nuclear energy in the taxonomy for sustainable financing is a condition for the EU objective of zero CO2 emissions by 2050 and a natural consequence of the scientific evidence regarding the sustainability of this energy source. As we have seen, the energy transition involves major social and economic changes.Nuclear energy is a proven source, with over 50 years of EU operating experience, which currently provides about 50% of the total energy without CO2 emissions in Europe, a pillar of the stability of national energy systems in the face of extreme challenges. The existing technology and regulations in the nuclear field, which are among the strictest in the world, ensure a safe framework for further development of this energy source, with multiple benefits of system, medium and social. We are sure that a science -based approach will be addressed within the European Commission. ”- Teodor Chirica, honorary president Romatom.
The common letter signed by the 10 pro-nuclear member states is the second of this kind transmitted to the European Commission, the previous one being published in March 2021.
“Romania has important projects in the nuclear field such as the construction of units 3 and 4, the re -technology of unit 1, the construction of the generation IV demonstrator Alfred, the implementation of the technology of the small modular reactors after 2035, projects that need a harmonization of the legislative framework regarding the environmental objectives and the investment strategies. We are supporters of the technological neutrality and the right of each Member State to determine its energy mix capable of ensuring the decarbonization but also stability in the power supply, under any weather conditions, at a reasonable price for the population, using the resources and competences already developed at national level.By developing the nuclear program, the premises for taking over the affected labor force from the closing sectors but also a transition easier to bear for citizens and industry are created.. ”- Lucian Rusu, Romatom President.
About Romatom:
Romatom was set up on January 10, 2001, currently incorporating 40 companies and associations specialized in providing services, products and works for the nuclear field and related fields.
The association aims to promote the use for peaceful nuclear energy in Romania and to support the national nuclear program, as well as the coordination of all the activities assumed by the accession and participation of the Association in Foratoma - the European Atomic Forum. At the same time, Romatom advocates for the protection and promotion of the interests of its members, representing the voice of the national nuclear industry, considering the technological and acquired know-how level, in order to fruiting them in practice. https://romatom.ro/
