Partnership Canada-Romania in the field of nuclear technologies
Between March 2-3, 2021, the organization of the Canadian nuclear industry (OCNI), Romatom, Energy, Nuclearelectrica and the Embassy of Canada in Romania organizes the online event "Canada-Romanian partnership in the field of nuclear technologies" dedicated to presenting the long-term cooperation relationship between the nuclear industries in both countries, as well as the perspectives of the new nuclear projects.
The event is the first to mark the 25th anniversary of the commissioning of Unit 1 from Cernavoda CNE in 1996, proving the beneficial cooperation between the Romanian and Canadian specialists and their experience that made it possible to put into operation the first nuclear reactor in Romania and who continued to obtain results in the construction and completion of the Cernav.function in 2007.
During the two days of the event, it benefits from the participation of 50 speakers who will cover large topics such as the role of nuclear energy in the future energy mix, aspects related to strategy and politics, new nuclear projects in Canada and Romania, including the project 3 and 4 from Cernavoda CNE and the project of retehnologization of the unit 1 from CNE CERNAVODA.Darlington successfully completed, aspects related to nuclear field regulations, fuel cycle and waste management, small modular reactory, non-electric nuclear energy applications, such as cobalt production, clean production and discussions related to the cooperation regarding the supply chain between the companies in the nuclear industry in Romania and Canada.Romatom.The event also includes a special section dedicated to the exchange of knowledge and good practices between specialized universities in the field of nuclear education because both countries recognize the importance of attracting, training and preservation of highly qualified workforce for current and future projects.
The panels on March 2 were opened by the excellence of Annick Goulet, Canada's ambassador to Romania, Bulgaria and the Republic of Moldova, the Minister of Small Affairs, the promotion of Exports and International Trade in Canada - Honorable Mary NG and Mr.Secretary of State, Dan Drăgan, within the Ministry of Energy.
“From nuclear power plants and operators, to regulatory bodies and research laboratories to nuclear waste management and advanced production technologies, strengthening cooperation and exchange of information between countries in nuclear technologies will play an important role in supporting Economic Relabing Economics 19, in Canada and around the world.Cooperation in the nuclear field will also help us to reach the targets assumed by the Canadian government of zero emissions by 2050 and will continue to represent a vital component in our efforts for safe and clean energy" - Honorable Mary NG, Canadian Minister of Small Affairs, promoting exports and international trade.
“Today, Romania and Canada through nuclear cooperation, advance to reach the development and decarbonization targets in Romania.Canada and the Canadian nuclear industry are expressing their interest in working with Romanian partners on the project Retehnologization project 1 and the construction of new nuclear units at Cernavoda CNE.Also, the Canadian nuclear industry aims to expand the partner with Romanian companies with expertise in the field of Candu beyond the Romanian market, for nuclear projects in Canada and other countries" - His Excellency Annick Goulet, Canada's ambassador to Romania, Bulgaria and the Republic of Moldova.
“Cooperation with the Nuclear Industry in Canada is a crucial factor in the completion of the two new CNE Cenravoda units, in a wider Euro-Atlantic context. The commissioning of them and the extension of the life of unit 1 will make a significant contribution to the achievement of the environmental objectives assumed by Romania, but also to the consolidation of the energy security of the supply and well -being at national and international level. The relationship between the two industries in Romania and Canada was successfully tested at the completion of the two units in operation in Cenravoda, the unit 1 completed in 1996 and the unit 2 completed in 2007. ”- Teodor Chirica, honorary president of Romatom.
“In Romania, today, nuclear energy provides 11,000 jobs that could increase to 20,000 jobs with the initiation of new nuclear projects. The capacity of the nuclear industry in Romania is evaluated at 1 - 1.6 billion euros, representing about 30% of the works of engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of units 3 and 4 from CNE.Romanian nuclear is looking forward to the new nuclear projects in both countries and future cooperation opportunities" - Lucian Rusu, president of Romatom.
“The Canada-Romanian partnership in the nuclear field is of significant importance for Nuclearelectrica, and the excellent experience in security and robust technology Candu used in units 1 and 2 proves the efficiency of long cooperation between the two countries.Nuclearelectrica is a member of Candu Owners Group and has worked closely with other Candu family nuclear plants to implement the highest security and efficiency standards.Regarding the future, Romania is firmly engaged in the further development of its nuclear program with ambitious strategic projects with social, economic and positive environmental impact: the extension of nuclear capacity through the project 3 and 4 from Cernavoda CNE, retehnologization of unit 1, the debt, as wellCobalt 60 and the production of clean hydrogen for which nuclear energy can be an economically feasible solution due to the production capacity. We see the Canadian-Romanian partnership in the field of nuclear technology as an accelerator of new nuclear projects on the market and we want to capitalize on the existing experience and knowledge by both sides" - Cosmin Ghita, general manager of Nuclearelectrica
“Ocni is very pleased to collaborate closely with the Romanian partners in the Romatom supply chain, and SNN along with the Canada Embassy to bring together leaders of the nuclear industry in Romania and Canada and technical experts to discuss a variety of important topics regarding major nuclear projects in both countries that will contribute to the national and global changelives by producing medical isotopes, creating and supporting thousands of high quality jobs in Romania and Canada. - Ron Oberth, OCNI general manager
“SNC-Lavalin is delighted and honored because it has played an important role in the collaboration between the nuclear industries in Canada and Romania from the beginning. It was a privilege and responsibility that we take very seriously. We would like to congratulate Nuclearlectrica for the 25th anniversary of Unit 1 from CNE Cernavoda, the first of the two Candu units in Romania. We look forward to continuing the relationship we have with SNN and the supply chain in Romania in the next 25 years of their journey for the continuous development of nuclear energy. ”-Bill Fox, vice-president SNC-Lavalin, Nuclear
