The Association of the Romanian - Romatom Atomic Forum, representing the nuclear industry in Romania, expresses its satisfaction for signing the Memorandum of understanding between SNN and CGN, a document aiming for the investment for building, commissioning and operating two nuclear units at Cernavoda, Constanța county.
,,The signing of the Memorandum of understanding between Nuclearelectrica and CGN regarding the development, construction, operation and decommissioning of units 3 and 4 Cernavoda by the Nuclearelectrica SA National Society (SNN) and China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) is an important step for the Romanian energy sector.Basically, the final phase of the selection procedure will be entered, a phase that involves negotiating and completing the investors agreement and the constitutive act in order to set up the new project company for the construction and completion of units 3 and 4 Cernavoda. We want the successful completion of this stage so that the actual works can begin. The nuclear industry in Romania appreciates the positive impact that this investment will have in the labor market, at the level of profile companies in our country. It would be the first major project initiated in Romania after 1990! ”, said Marius Gheorghiu, the general director of Elcomex IEA, the company that owns the Romatom Presidency.
The completion of the project of units 3 and 4 from the Cernavoda CNE will contribute to the increase of the energy security of Romania, the reduction of carbon emissions and the provision of electric energies at bearable prices for consumers. At the same time, there will be a significant revival of the economic and local business environment, by involving the national industry in the fields of equipment and components, construction-assembly and engineering in the execution and operation of new units, CGN recognizing "The technical capacity and interest of local companies to subcontract portions of the engineering, procurement and construction contract, according to the applicable law”Apart from the economic benefits, the human resources component must be mentioned, the project having the ability to attract qualified labor force.
,,According to Romatom analyzes, 47 Romanian, private or state companies, they have the necessary capabilities in the implementation of units 3 and 4 from Cernavoda, resulting in at least 16,000 direct jobs in the national industry for the completion of this project", Added Marius Gheorghiu.
The role of nuclear energy is significant in environmental protection, two nuclear units from Cernavoda contributing to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by approx.12,000,000 tons Co2/year, which would otherwise occur by burning fossil fuels. At the same time, the contribution of nuclear energy by building two new units in Cernavoda strengthens energy security at national and regional level.
Currently, the 130 nuclear reactors, existing in 14 of the Member States, generate about 30% of the electricity produced at the European Union level, representing 50% of the electricity with low carbon emissions, at the EU level. In a speech held in June this year, Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete spoke of nuclear energy as part of solutions for energy challenges.Among the advantages listed in favor of technology are: tape delivery, low carbon emissions, the important role in ensuring energy security and the contribution to reaching EU targets on decarbonization.

About Romatom:
Romatom started on the road on January 10, 2001, when 14 companies, with private or state capital, as well as two non-governmental associations, decided to set up the Romanian Atomic Forum.Currently, Romatom has over 30 members.
The association aims to promote the use for peaceful nuclear energy in Romania and to support the national nuclear program, as well as the coordination of all the activities assumed by the accession and participation of the Association in Foratom - the European Atomic Forum. At the same time, Romatom advocates for the protection and promotion of the interests of its members, representing the voice of the national nuclear industry, considering the technological and acquired know-how level, in order to fruiting them in practice.
