The Romanian Atomic Forum ("Romatom") marks the 46th anniversary of the establishment of the Nuclear Research Institute in Pitesti ("ICN"), currently the Branch of the Autonomous Administration for Nuclear Energy ("Ratten").
On July 1, 1971, the foundations of the Institute for Nuclear Technologies (ITN) were laid, today ICN Pitesti with an initial team of 50 Romanian specialists from the Institute of Atomic Physics, in order to develop Candu 6 nuclear technology for the construction of nuclear reactors from Cernavoda. The institute has had several names and administrative classifications (ITN, IRNE, ICN) over time, making an important contribution to the realization of the Cernavoda nuclear project, but also to the development of the authorities in the field, being a resource of cadres and managers for the nuclear agency and for radioactive waste, the National Commission for the Control of Nuclear Activities. In the Romanian energy, ITN represented both an authority in the field of applicative research for nuclear projects, as well as a first contact of the Romanian specialists with international standards in the nuclear field and the specific quality management system, developing research-development programs and services adapted to the needs of the nuclear industry in Romania.
Currently, ICN Pitesti provides advanced research programs in the field of nuclear security, radioactive waste management and environmental protection, analysis of events and processes of exploiting Cernavoda in order to monitor and streamline but also to prolong the life period, irradiation and radioisotopic technologies. Also, ICN Pitesti is involved, along with Ansaldo and Enea Italy in the consortium dedicated to the demonstrator for the rapidly cooled generation IV, low carbon dioxide technology, a project supported by the European sustainable nuclear initiative (ESNII).
„46 years of nuclear research in Romania, with visible results in the performance of the Romanian nuclear industry and internationally recognized represents a confirmation of the basic resource of this field, namely the specialists, by whose vision and effort, important applications in the development of nuclear technology, for the manufacture of the nuclear fuel, the testing of the nuclear equipment, the nuclear equipment and the nuclear technology,of inspection with applications in the creation and braise of units 1 and 2 from Cernavoda, ICN continuing to be an important supplier of studies, analyzes, projects and solutions for the Cernavoda nuclear power plant and the nuclear fuel factory in Pitesti, being also involved in the latest international projects. We can say that ICN Pitesti was and is a roadblock in the nuclear field and a reference point for generations of specialists who started their career at the research reactor, laboratories and test stands within the Institute.I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to express the gratitude of the nuclear industry towards the founding parents of the Institute: regret the academician Ion Ursu, dr. Alexandru Olariu, Dr.ing.Nicolae Andreescu, the first general manager, who played a defining role in the creation and structuring of ITN, as well as Prof. Dr. Ionel Purica, who had an important role in preparing and finalizing the ITN concept but also to wish the young generation of ICN specialists ”, said Mr.Teodor Chirica, honorary president Romatom.
About Romatom:
Romatom was set up on January 10, 2001, when 14 companies, with private or state capital, as well as two non-governmental associations, decided to set up the Romanian Atomic Forum.Currently, Romatom has over 30 members.
The association aims to promote the use for peaceful nuclear energy in Romania and to support the national nuclear program, as well as the coordination of all the activities assumed by the accession and participation of the Association in Foratoma - the European Atomic Forum. At the same time, Romatom advocates for the protection and promotion of the interests of its members, representing the voice of the national nuclear industry, considering the technological and acquired know-how level, in order to fruiting them in practice. http://romatom.ro/
