ROMATOM & AtkinsRéalis — Suppliers’ Day & Survey for Future Nuclear Projects

ROMATOM and Candu Energy, an AtkinsRéalis company, hosted the Romanian Suppliers’ Day on October 8, 2025, bringing together over 35 companies to explore collaboration opportunities with the international consortia that won a $2.85 billion contract from Nuclearelectrica.

Event Development

The event agenda featured opening remarks from Mr. Teodor Chirica, PhD, Knight of the National Order “For Merit” and President-Emeritus of ROMATOM, as well as Mrs. Corina Truică, President of ROMATOM. A keynote address was delivered by AtkinsRéalis on supplier engagement and qualification pathways, presented by Mr. Adrian Davies, Vice President Supply Chain, and Mr. Sebastian Palazzo, Procurement Director, followed by a project update from Energonuclear, through Mr. Robert Lis, Head of Project Management. The event continued with a Q&A session and structured B2B interviews, supported by a supplier capability survey. In addition to dedicated B2B sessions, a broader networking session also took place.

ROMATOM' s vision and the Partnership with Canada

During the event, Mrs. Corina Truică, Chair of the Board of Directors – ROMATOM, emphasized the long-standing partnership with Canada in CANDU technology, highlighting how Cernavodă’s success reflects decades of shared engineering expertise, safety culture, and operational excellence.

The Importance of Suppliers Day

“Why today matters.”

“This is a working day. For Atkins, it provides a direct view of capable Romanian suppliers focused on safety, quality, and schedule. For companies, it offers clarity on expectations, standards, and prequalification—so that potential turns into concrete opportunities at home and abroad.”

Invitation for New Members and Membership Benefits

Companies that are not yet ROMATOM members received a special “welcome” message: “Join us!”, explaining the advantages of membership:

  • A stronger collective voice in shaping policy and market design.
  • Access to key information — tenders, standards, qualification requirements.
  • Targeted networking — purpose-built connections with prime contractors and complementary partners.
  • • Capability development — working groups, audits, and training sessions to enhance QA, documentation control, EHS (Environment, Health, and Safety), and delivery discipline.

“Membership makes you visible, prepared, and connected.”

Requirements and Opportunities for Suppliers

Mr. Adrian Davies, Vice President Supply Chain, highlighted the importance of upcoming opportunities for the local industry and how to engage, providing details about the vendor qualification process and compliance requirements (quality, safety, documentation). He also outlined project delivery practices and EHS expectations.

Project Updates: Cernavoda Units 3 and 4

Mr. Robert Lis, Head of Project Management – EnergoNuclear, presented an update on Cernavodă Units 3 & 4, confirming the use of the CANDU 6 design (with Unit 2 as the reference plant), the need to incorporate a comprehensive set of safety-related design changes, and the plan to complete the two units with a combined capacity of approximately 1,440 MWe and an output exceeding 10.5 TWh per year.

The vision of the ROMATOM Executive Director

Mr. Bogdan Termegan, Executive Director of ROMATOM, shared the following message about the event and ROMATOM’s future plans:

“At ROMATOM, we facilitate seamless collaboration between global technology vendors and our local industrial partners. In essence, we ensure that Romanian suppliers are fully integrated into large-scale international projects.

Beyond that, we also serve as a bridge between the Romanian government and academia. We support recruitment efforts and help facilitate technology transfer and R&D initiatives. We’re here to make sure that innovation and local expertise go hand in hand.

To add even more value, we actively promote Romanian companies on the international stage. For example, we organize the Romanian Pavilion at the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris and plan to participate in two additional international fairs next year. This helps our suppliers gain visibility and build new partnerships globally.”
