The nuclear industries in Canada and Romania announce the formation of a new partnership to promote cooperation in the civil nuclear field
The Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) and the Roman Atomic Forum (Romatom) have signed a memorandum of understanding
Paris (November 30, 2021) - The Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) and the Romanian Atomic Forum (Romatom) have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote the use of nuclear energy internationally by efficiently operating existing nuclear power stations and developing new nuclear technologies, including to intensify commercial relations between the two associations in the civil nuclear field.
The memorandum strengthens the cooperation relationships between the two countries in the nuclear field and emphasizes the development of new Candu reactors, the re -technologicalization of the existing ones, the promotion of the technology of the small nuclear reactors and the advanced reactors, including the intensification of the research, development and innovation activities in the two countries as well as in third countries.
The memorandum was signed at the Canada Embassy in Paris, in the margin of the International Nuclear Exhibition (WNE), in the presence of the Minister of Energy in Romania, Mr.Virgil-Daniel Popescu, of the President and Executive Director of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AEcl), Mr.Fred Dermarkar and business charges from the Embassy of Canada, DNA.Amy Baker.
“The signing of this memorandum represents the continuation of our program to conclude partnerships with top associations in the nuclear industry", Declared the president and executive director of the CNA, Mr. John Gorman."The partnership between Canada and Romania in the nuclear field has a history of decades.Nuclear energy is already playing an important role in ensuring energy production in Romania, with two reactors when operating at Cernavoda CNE.Romania has adopted energy policies that provide for the construction of two new nuclear units in Cernavoda until 2031 and the refurbishment of unit 1 between 2026-2028”.

Through memorandum, the two associations agree to:
- It intensifies the cooperation between Romania and Canada in the commercial field and of the investments in civil nuclear programs, based on the solid partnerships between the nuclear industries in Romania and Canada
- Explore policies of common interest in the nuclear field, including the role of nuclear energy in mitigating climatic changes and integration of nuclear energy with renewable
- Consolidation of efforts to promote clean energy and global taxonomy that includes nuclear energy
- Encouraging cooperation in other areas related to nuclear such as the production of medical and clean hydrogen
- Cooperation in the field of human resources and the training of staff in the two countries.
