The General Assembly establishing ROMATOM took place on January 10, 2001 in the presence of representatives of 16 founding members, legal entities and two non-profit associations, the Romanian Nuclear Industry Union (UNIR) and the Romanian Association "Nuclear Energy" (AREN). By the decision of the District Court of Bucharest, following the meeting of May 3, 2001, ROMATOM acquires legal personality, obtaining the Certificate of Registration in the Register of Associations and Foundations located at the Registry of the District Court of Bucharest on June 19, 2001.

The impatience to be part of the European nuclear group led the representatives of the Initiative Committee to request membership in FORATOM (now Nucleareurope), while ROMATOM was still in formation. The response from FORATOM (now Nucleareurope) was favorable, ROMATOM becoming a member of the European Forum on December 13, 2000.

It was also then that the foundations of a long-term collaboration with the Permanent Representation of Romania to the European Union were laid, a cooperation that continues to this day, with fruitful results in promoting the interests of the national nuclear industry and its affirmation at the European level.

From its establishment to the present, ROMATOM has maintained its initial profile, dedicating itself to the peaceful use of nuclear energy in Romania and supporting the national nuclear program, as well as coordinating the actions and promoting the interests of its members, while ensuring the coordination of all activities required by its participation in FORATOM activities.

At the date of this review, ROMATOM has over 60 members who have an active presence or are interested in the national nuclear industry.
